The Principles behind Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is a type of cancer treatment whereby medicine is used to attack rapidly-growing cells in the body, including cancer cells.
The human body is made up of cells. These cells normally grow, divide, and die in an orderly fashion. While a person is growing up, the cells divide rapidly to accommodate bodily development. However, once adulthood is reached, the cells divide only to repair, rejuvenate, or regenerate worn-out and injured cells. When some cells grow out of control, they increase the risk of becoming cancerous. Cancer cells are abnormal cells in that, instead of dying, they reproduce new abnormal cells. They invade the normal, healthy tissues of the body and may even spread throughout the body through the blood. This is when chemotherapy as a cancer treatment option may help.
